Chef Pedro Gets Second Chances

Every day, beloved local restaurant ‘celebrity’ Chef Pedro Rosado is at the gym by 5:45am. He does cardio for 45 minutes and then hits the weights a bit. “It keeps me going,” explains Chef Pedro.

However, on May 14, 2019, things were very different. Chef Pedro went in to have a simple hernia operation and things took a turn. “I got an allergic reaction to the anesthesia and I flatlined,” recalls Chef Pedro. “I have to thank Coral Gables Rescue who rushed me from UM to South Miami Hospital. I flatlined twice and they brought me back. I was pretty much dead and they refused to give up on me.” During the day’s ordeal, Chef was put into an induced coma and word spread on social media that he had passed away. But as we know today, that is not true. Chef Pedro is getting a second chance at life.

Aside from the broken ribs sustained when they were performing CPR, it is amazing how normal Chef Pedro’s life has come back. “When I woke up, I didn’t know about everything that had happened to me. I just knew I was alive. The pulmonary doctor said that I was a true miracle and that they weren’t going to touch me again.”

Chef Pedro spent a month in the hospital recovering. When I asked how the food was, he said “As a chef, I can tell you they need some help.” After he was off liquid diet, Chef was not shy about making suggestion about how to improve the food.

Chef Pedro’s second second chance came next. As he was recovering, Bagel Emporium owner David Strawderman came to visit. The timing was perfect. Bagel Emporium wanted Chef and Chef had seen the changes over at Roasters ‘n Toasters where he had spent 22 years. So, when he exited his recovery, he entered his new role as Executive Chef at Bagel Emporium.

“We are revamping the menu with some of my favorites. We’ll be ready for High Holidays and we are putting a lot of effort into our catering where we guarantee great value.”

Store Manager Otto Regalado is thrilled to have Chef Pedro onboard. “He’s definitely an asset and a great addition. He brings such a positive personality to the table. Their loss is our gain!”

“My advice to anyone in the hospital is to get out of bed, minimize taking pain pills and get walking as soon as possible,” says the miracle man. “I got a second chance in life, and I’m not going to take a day for granted.” Chef Pedro’s third second chance is that he is waiting to be cleared for surgery, so he can get rid of that pesky hernia. Yup, he’s excited to go.
