First Day of School Year 2016

Well, August 22 is in the rear view mirror, which means school is back in session. It also means our traffic holiday is over. Palmetto Bay experienced both the joy and pain of the first day back.

At Coral Reef Elementary, both the fire and police departments were on-hand to help parents drop off their little ones. Lt. Gary Windsor from Engine Company 4 even high-fived children as they made it onto school grounds.

Some lucky kids spent time on daddy’s lap before the bell rang.

And although the crossing guard deemed the day successful...

The view from above painted a different picture. Despite new efforts and procedures, traffic still was quite congested.

Mayor Eugene Flinn was positive. “We’re working with the schools and County officials to make smart changes. Traffic planning is a number one priority for us. We’ve made some good adjustments and more are on the way.”

At Southwood Middle School, there were far less parents, but traffic still was inflated from the norm. “It’s our hope to see marked improvements as we affect new processes and procedures,” remarked one of the Miami-Dade police officers on the scene.
