Annual Charity DUI Golf Tourney

Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Robert Glenn Smith dedicated his police service to keeping drunk drivers off the road. He was a member of the Tri-County DUI Task Force and was regularly in the ‘100 Club’, an honor for arresting more than 100 drunk drivers annually. Ironically, on July 26, 1997, he was struck and killed by a drunk driver while on duty.

In his honor, his wife, Lisa Smith, established the Trooper Robert Glenn Smith Foundation, a 501(c)(3) corporation. This year it will run the 4th annual “Fallen Not Forgotten” Golf Tournament to benefit Javier “Javi” Perez, the South Dade Senior High School Principal who had to have both of his legs amputated after a drunk driver hit him while coaching his son's little league team on April 26.

Although Perez has left the hospital, his rehabilitation continues and he will need a great deal of financial support. “We recognize this horrific situation and, along with POAT, the Police Officer Assistance Trust, we are raising money for Principal Perez,” explained Smith.

“I couldn’t have done the past three years and this new golf event without the help of Police Sergeant David Greenwell, who retired at the beginning of this year with 33 stellar years of service,”remarked Smith. “Our sponsors are wonderful and I can’t thank them enough.” The Foundation is still looking for a $2500 golf/cart sponsor.

Last year, there were nearly 50 participants. The event raised approximately $10,000. Smith explains, “This year, we are expecting a lot more people because of the beloved principal. We already have twelve teams and think we’ll reach 25 by the day of the event. I think we can reach $20,000 in donations.”
