It’s a strange name for a pub/pizzeria, but Maxwell Brothers (for short) is a wonderful new addition to restaurants in Palmetto Bay. Thank goodness they add “Quality Pizza and Beer” as their tag line.

Way back in 1866, at the end of the Civil War, Robert Maxwell opened what would ultimately become the oldest family-owned clothing store in the United States.  Four generations and nearly 14 decades later, great-great-great grandson, Todd Maxwell, is carrying on the tradition of unparalleled quality and service. Specializing in hand-crafted beer and pizza, the Maxwell institution continues.

John Falco, a co-owner, explains Maxwell Brothers as a loose speakeasy. In the rear is a lounge area as an homage to the Maxwell family, complete with vintage seating and photos of the businesses going back to 1866.

Maxwell Brothers comes from a lineage of other oddly named eateries. Lincoln’s Beard Brewing Co. (SW 41st Street, near the Palmetto) was first, then came Strange Beast Brewpub & Pizzeria (West Kendall) and now Maxwell Brothers. Falco explains, “I’m a very kooky individual and John gives me lots of poetic license. When I come up with a restaurant concept, I think it’s cool and interesting. And if the people in the area agree, we get a hit like Maxwell Brothers.

The pub/pizzeria, which opened a few months ago as a soft opening, is still today, they await signage and just opened their pergola patio.

The space is an eclectic mix of styles. The already mentioned a vintage living room in the back, four beer tanks (that will soon hold the microbrews), a custom-made and tile decorated pizza oven, plus a row of beer taps and bar stool seating in addition to high-tops and tables. “We are beer people. Brewing is at the heart of what we do, although I am sure many people see us as a pizzeria, and I’m OK with that,” explains Falco. “We have a great piece of allure and it is genuine. We know our patrons appreciate us for what we do.”

The pizza oven is an ‘All in the Family” affair. Todd Maxwell’s wife painted the mosaic tiles that adorn the custom centerpiece. The ingredients for all their food is sourced as locally as possible. They really do make a special and different tasting pizza. You’ll have to try it to understand.

The vibe is fun. There is a strange beast of a music mix going while everyone from people coming off their shift for a beer to families looking for some great oven-fired pizza. The kookiness just works, but don’t expect to understand why. You order at the counter and can watch the staff build your pizza and draw you a fabulous microbrew, glass of wine or any number of soft beverages. The patio allows you to take in the food and drink in a COVID-friendly atmosphere.

It has been a bit of a challenge opening during the pandemic. And while the rules shifted and created challenges, Maxwell and Falco persisted. Palmetto Bay is better for it.
